Lovejoy C-276 C-type Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR, Buna-N, Nitrile rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.

Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard elastomeric coupling and universal joint has not.
Twin Spring Coupling offers something different.
Industrial power transmission is broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment. Traditionally these have been serviced by two different couplings – Motion couplings like Lovejoy C-276 C-type couplings and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out. With Hytrel and Bronze inserts that number is halved.
The elastomeric insert also compress over time and increase vibration means the spider insert will need to be replaced.
Cracked hubs in the jaw type coupling is also a maintenance issue especially in high torque or stop start applications.
The universal joint is available in two versions, block and pin or friction bearing and needle bearing, they can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission that’s going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
