Industrial power transmission couplings

Twin Spring coupling replaces all mechanical power transmission coupling units, in all kind of industrial applications.

Industrial flexible couplings are broken into two sections, low/zero backlash with 0-2 degree misalignment and anything over that. That includes universal joints, beam, oldham and elastomeric couplings.

Industrial couplings normally run at higher speeds but require less torque capability as high speed and high flexibility can not be combined, until now.

Jaw type couplings are well used as they are a fail safe coupling, that means if the spider insert fails the jaws will clamp together keeping the coupling running but vibration issues will mean it will need to be repairing as soon as possible otherwise equipment damage is probable. Jaw type coupling while widely used can only run at 1-2 degree out of alignment so it limits some of its uses.

Beam Coupling allows for the same angle of misalignment (max 2 degrees) but still with only minimal torque capability, its design means it can be used in minimal/zero backlash applications (motors etc) but it doesn’t handle vibration well and this leads to potential equipment damage.

Bellows coupling – Another industrial coupling that allows for a slight increase in misalignment (max 4 degrees) but its also doesn’t handle vibration well and has minimal torque capabilities.

Elastomeric couplings – While also used in industrial applications like pumps and food processing, they traditionally are used in higher HP applications. It is designed to be used over a few degrees out of alignment also. At Twin Spring because we don’t use bearings our couplings are more flexible than standard industrial couplings, the twin spring design also means increased torsional stiffness required for zero/low backlash applications. Adding the spring design absorbs vibration makes it a excellent replacement for beam, bellows, jaw type couplings.

The other sector of couplings are universal joints, and they still have the same issues they have used in any other application but with additional issues in the industrial sector.

The bearings still need to be constantly greased or the ball bearings inside them will seize due to the increased heat and need to be replaced (potentially cracking the yoke at the same time)

Speed also is an issue for universal joints, high speed also puts increased workload on the bearings, meaning even if greased constantly, they will wear out and need replacing.

Misalignment – While universal joints are used in industrial applications because they are able to be used in misalignment angles larger than other industrial couplings, this still means the bearings are put under increased stress and wear out sooner, like when used in other industries, the technology doesnt allow for the bearings to be used in high misalignment angles.

We do things differently mainly because our Twin Spring Couplings don’t have bearings so the replacement factor does not apply to our flexible couplings.

This also means MRO inventory of couplings is reduced because we have 1 coupling unit that can do the job of a number of different couplings.

Reduced maintenance for both servo and universal joints saves money also and when you add unplanned maintenance (coupling failure) that can add up to not only lost hours but sometimes days if components like yokes or spider inserts are not available.
