Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – Buna-N/NBR/Nitrile Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert and can only run at a slower speed.
The Lovejoy L-276 Jaw type coupling can be replaced with the TSC500 model, regardless of whether it uses a SOX/Buna-N, Urethane, Bronze or Hytrel spider insert.
Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard coupling and universal joint has not.

Industrial power transmission is broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment.
Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings – Motion control couplings like Lovejoy jaw, elastomeric type couplings and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out.
The spider insert regardless of what material it is made of will need replacement, the softer SOX/Buna-N/Urethane need to be replaced more often as it suffers from compress with general day to day usage, but also any angular misalignment means the “legs” of the spider wear.
Both types of wear increase vibration which means equipment damage is possible. Even though the jaw coupling is a safety coupling that is if the spider insert fails all together it will still function but with a large increase of vibration.
The universal joint can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings (Friction or Needle) greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission that’s going to create interruption due to equipment downtime and a increased annual maintenance bill.
