Couplings in the mining industry have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, the automobile has evolved but the technology that makes up the universal joint has not.

Worn bearings are the main factor in universal joint replacement either the pre lubricated or the greased version. The cheap cost of the bearing cross for most people think its a worthwhile coupling but the amount of labor involved in regards to monthly maintenance, greasing and eventual replacement means it makes it not as cheap as initially thought.
Elastomeric couplings like jaw couplings are an alternative due to their elastomeric membrane which is impervious to moisture, the only issue is the coupling itself can usually be used at only 1/2° to 1° which makes it a source of maintenance as anything over that means the membrane wears at the edges and the compression of the membrane from use means it also needs to be replaced. The inserts are cheap but the time, labor and lost production means cheap turns into expensive.
The other aspect of the bearings or spider inserts or hubs is the availability of them as well, if they arent in the supply store etc then the machinery cannot be used until they are replaced.
