Couplings in the industrial sector traditionally are broken into two sectors, the beam/bellows or elastomeric couplings that can only run at angles of 1° or less, as they cannot physically flex beyond that, Bronze/Hytrel can only run at 1/2°.
Lovejoy L-110 Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR- Buna-N Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively harder and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.
Elastomeric couplings like jaw couplings are designed for high speed, low torque and low angular misalignment. The closer the jaw coupling comes to the 1° the legs of the spider insert begin to wear and this leads to the spider insert needing to be replaced.
The L-110 elastomeric insert is used not only to allow the coupling to be flexible but it also is used to absorb vibration between the input and output hub. This is why when a spider insert fails it must be replaced quickly as the vibration generated without the insert being there can damage equipment.
The couplings torque compresses the insert and eventually the insert has to be replaced because of that compression and the increased vibration generated. The vibration leads to equipment damage and the cost of a cheap jaw coupling becomes very expensive.
Jaw couplings the spiders wear after use of 1°, and with compression of the insert and hubs can crack are the main negatives when selecting the jaw coupling as a flexible shaft coupling, trying to avoid the maintenance of a universal joint leads to maintenance with jaw couplings.
Twin Spring Coupling can run up to 25° without needing to be lubrication, and at high angles of misalignment and comparable high speeds to traditional industrial couplings.
