Lovejoy L-225 jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR – nitrile rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.

Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, the industry has evolved but the power transmission technology that makes up the standard coupling and universal joint has not.

Industrial mechanical power transmission couplings are broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment.
Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings – Motion control couplings like elastomeric jaw type couplings and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling like the jaw coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1/2 – 1° of misalignment before they start to wear out.
Adding to that the compression of the elastomeric nitrile rubber spider insert means as time goes on the compression means vibration increases and the spider insert has to be replaced.
The universal joint can run at more than 5° but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission coupling that’s going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
