Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR/Buna-N), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.

Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard jaw type coupling and universal joint has not.
Twin Spring Coupling offers something different.
Industrial power transmission couplings are broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment.
Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings – Motion control couplings like Lovejoy jaw couplings which is an elastomeric type coupling and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out. Even less if they use a spider insert made of Hytrel or Bronze.
The universal joint has 2 offerings, Friction Bearing or Block and Pin and Needle bearing. Friction bearing are slow (1700 rpm) and cant flex past 25 degrees. Needle bearing are faster (6000 rpm) and more flexible but are also more expensive.
Both types of uni joints need to be maintained and replaced when worn, this adds to the cost of ownership as this maintenance and replacement means machinery downtime and additional cost.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission couplings they are going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
