Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the universal joint has not.

Industrial power transmission couplings are broken into two main areas, high speed, low angle of misalignment and lower speed, higher angle of misalignment. Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings.
Motion control couplings like jaw, elastomeric type couplings and the other is the universal joint.
The universal joint is also available in two different types, friction bearing also called block and pin and needle bearing. The friction bearing universal joint is a cheap coupling but has its limitations,
1. it can only be used to 25 degrees.
2. it can only run at a maximum speed of 1700 rpm otherwise it causes the bearing to overheat.
Needle bearings allow the universal joint to 1. run at speeds up to 6000 rpm, and also 2. be flexible to 45 degrees. These features come at an premium price and still need to be maintained (greased) and replaced when worn.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out.
The Lovejoy NB-8 universal joint can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that the Lovejoy NB-8 traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission that’s going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
This is the paradox of traditional couplings, there aren’t any options you either design and build your equipment around these short comings or have to deal with the increased maintenance schedules these couplings require.
