Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR/Buna-N/Nitrile Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert. The Lovejoy jaw with Hytrel and Bronze spider insert with the TSC500 model.
Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard jaw spider coupling and universal joint has not.
Twin Spring Coupling offers something different.
Industrial power transmission couplings are broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment.
Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings – Motion control couplings like Lovejoy elastomeric jaw type couplings and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out. The spider insert will need to be replaced for two reasons.
1. General wear – The elastomer insert compresses over time so it means that vibration starts to increase with the NBR/Buna-N spider versions.
2. Edge wear – The more a jaw coupling flexes (1° for the Buna-N/NBR/SOX version, or 1/2° for the Hytrel/Bronze version) the legs.
The universal joint is available in two kinds, Friction bearing or Block and Pin and Needle bearing. Friction bearing is slow (1700 rpm) and needs constant greasing to stop from seizing and still need to be replaced when worn.
Needle bearings can run at 6000 rpm and are lot more flexible but also need greasing and will need to be replaced also when worn.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission couplings are going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
