How to Read the L-Series Part Number
A complete Lovejoy L-series order requires two hubs + one spider. The hubs can have different bore sizes (one for each shaft), but both must be the same L-size.
Example: Connecting a 3/4″ motor shaft to a 7/8″ pump shaft → order two L-075 hubs (one bored to 3/4″, one bored to 7/8″) + one L-075 spider.
The spider is sold separately. This matters because:
- You can replace just the spider without replacing the hubs — much cheaper maintenance
- You can swap spider materials to tune performance (harder spider = less damping, more torque capacity)
Spider Material Selection Guide
| Spider Material | Durometer | Temperature Range | Best For | Avoid When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NBR Rubber | ~40A (softest) | -40°F to +212°F | High shock loads, general use, log splitters | Oil exposure, high temps |
| Urethane (Std) | ~92A | -65°F to +160°F | Moderate shock, longer life than NBR | High shock at low temp |
| Hytrel (Polyester) | ~72D | -85°F to +250°F | Oil, heat, chemical resistance | Budget-sensitive apps |
| Bronze | Rigid | -300°F to +450°F | Extreme temp, very high torque | Any shock loading |

Important: Hubs from different manufacturers in the same L-size are generally interchangeable — the jaw geometry is an industry standard. Spiders are also interchangeable across brands within the same L-size. Always verify bore and keyway dimensions before mixing brands on critical applications.
Most Common L-Series Applications by Size
L-075 (most popular size): The workhorse of the range. Found in log splitters, small pump drives, conveyor tail shafts, light packaging equipment, and HVAC fan drives. The 3/4″ bore suits most small motor output shafts directly.
L-095 / L-099 / L-100: Standard industrial motor sizes. Found in pump skids, compressors, mixers, and agitators connected to 1″ shafts. The L-095 and L-100 are often interchangeable on size-borderline applications — check torque rating, not just bore.
L-110 / L-150: Medium-duty industrial. Common in conveyor drives, larger pump sets, and agricultural PTO-adjacent applications.
L-190 / L-225: Heavy industrial and agricultural. These sizes handle significant torque — found on grain augers, heavy conveyor drives, and pump stations.
When to Replace vs. When to Repair
A jaw coupling spider should be replaced when:
- The spider shows visible cracking, chunking, or permanent deformation
- Backlash (rotational looseness) has noticeably increased
- Vibration in the drivetrain has increased without other explanation
- The spider is oil-soaked (NBR rubber degrades rapidly in oil — switch to Hytrel if this is a recurring issue)
Never replace just one hub unless it is physically damaged (cracked, bored out of round, keyway damaged). Hub replacement is expensive — spider replacement is cheap. The spider is the wear element by design.
Ordering the Right Lovejoy L-Series Replacement
Before ordering, confirm:
- L-size — measure OD of existing coupling (see chart above)
- Bore size — measure shaft diameter for each side
- Keyway — standard, metric, or none? Confirm keyway width and depth
- Spider material — match existing or upgrade (Hytrel if oil is present)
- Set screw or clamp style hub — set screw is standard; clamp style available for some sizes

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix hub brands in the same coupling?
Yes, within the same L-size. L-series jaw geometry is an industry standard, so a Lovejoy L-075 hub mates correctly with a TB Woods L-075 hub and a Martin ML-075 spider. Verify before installing on critical machinery.
What’s the difference between L-095 and L-099?
Minimal — the L-099 is a slightly larger OD (1.88″ vs 1.75″) with a slightly higher torque rating. Both accept 1″ bores. The L-099 is less common and was developed to fill a gap between the L-095 and L-100.
My spider is crumbling. What caused it?
Most common causes: exposure to oil or grease (switch to Hytrel), shaft misalignment exceeding the coupling’s rating (align shafts), or simply age and use. NBR rubber spiders have a finite service life even in ideal conditions.
Can I use an L-075 and L-090 hub together?
No. Both hubs must be the same L-size for the jaws to interlock correctly.
