How to Measure Coupling Bore Size (Without Guessing Wrong)

Bore size is the diameter of the hole in a coupling hub that the shaft slides into — and it’s the single most common reason a coupling order gets returned. Measure your shaft with a digital caliper at the point where the coupling will sit, not at the shaft end, and round to the nearest standard size rather than up or down. Get this one step right and everything else about coupling selection gets easier.
Why Bore Size Trips People Up
Bore size sounds simple until you’re staring at a shaft with no drawing, no nameplate, and a coupling that has to fit within a few thousandths of an inch. Couplings are typically bored to a standard fractional or metric size (1/4″, 3/8″, 5/8″, 10mm, 12mm, etc.), and most manufacturers hold a tight tolerance — often +0.0005″ to +0.001″ over nominal — so the hub slides on smoothly without slop. Measure loosely and you’ll end up with a coupling that’s either too tight to install or loose enough to walk and wear prematurely.
The other trap: measuring the wrong spot. Shafts are sometimes stepped, worn at the tip, or coated where they mate to a bearing. If you measure at the wrong point, the number you get won’t match what the coupling actually needs to grip.

- A digital caliper capable of reading to 0.001″ or 0.02mm — a tape measure or ruler is not accurate enough for this job.
- Access to the full length of the shaft where the coupling will sit (clean it first — paint, rust, and grease all throw off the reading).
- The equipment’s spec sheet or nameplate, if available, as a cross-check.

How to Measure Shaft Diameter for Bore Size (4 Steps)
1. Clean and inspect the shaft
Wipe down the section of shaft where the coupling hub will sit. Check for visible wear, scoring, or an out-of-round condition — a worn shaft will give you an inconsistent reading depending on where you measure.
2. Measure at the coupling location, not the shaft end
Close the caliper jaws around the shaft at the exact point the coupling hub will clamp down. Shaft ends are frequently chamfered or slightly undersized compared to the body of the shaft — measuring there will give you a number that’s too small.
3. Take three readings and use the largest
Rotate 90° and 180° and measure again. Shafts wear unevenly, especially on older equipment. Taking three readings around the circumference and using the largest consistent value gives you a truer picture than a single measurement.
4. Round to the nearest standard bore size — don’t round up
Coupling bores come in standard increments (1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″, 7/8″, 1″, or metric equivalents like 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm). If your shaft measures 0.748″, that’s a 3/4″ shaft (0.750″ nominal) — order the 3/4″ bore. Never round up to the next larger standard size hoping “it’ll fit with the set screw” — an oversized bore won’t grip the shaft properly regardless of how tight the set screw is torqued.
