Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.
Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard coupling and universal joint has not.
Twin Spring Coupling offers something different.
Industrial power transmission couplings are broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment.
Traditionally these two needs have been service by two different couplings – Motion control couplings like Lovejoy elastomeric jaw type couplings and the universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1° of misalignment before they start to wear out. If they have Hytrel or Bronze spider inserts that is only 1/2°.
The universal joint can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly. The universal joint is broken into two versions, Friction bearing or Block and Pin and Needle bearing.
Needle bearing universal joints are expensive but run faster and up to 45° but they too wear out and need to be replaced. Friction bearings need constant greasing and can only run at 1700 rpm and work at 25° they too also wear out and need to be replaced.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission couplings they are going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
