Couplings in the industrial sector traditionally are broken into two sectors, the beam/bellows or elastomeric couplings that can only run at angles of 1° or less, as they cannot physically flex beyond that, Hytrel and Bronze spider inserts can only run at 1/2°.
Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR SOX/Buna-N/Nitrile Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.
Jaw couplings are different, in industrial uses like conveyor belts and servo motors and pumps, their job is a very specific one, high speed small angle of misalignment and for those jobs they are well suited but you add any degree of movement, particularly axial or vertical misalignment.
They wear quickly and that wear produces increased vibration and at high speed that can produce equipment damage, bearing wear.
While the spider inserts are cheap, this means equipment has to go offline to allow service staff to replace the inserts and also to check for equipment and hub damage.
Even without this kind of variation wear, the spider inserts do have to be replaced especially the softer SOX/Urethane and Rubber ones as the compression with their daily use means the inserts becomes thinner and this means an increase in vibration.
Twin Spring doesn’t have inserts, just a single central ball bearing, so there is nothing to replace, no internal spider to wear and with the twin springs allows increased flexibility.
It also has the ability to absorb shock loads without damaging equipment and the shear pins as a safety mechanism to ensure no machine overloads.
Jaw couplings the spiders wear after use of 1-2° and yokes can crack.
Twin Spring Coupling can run up to 25° without needing to be lubrication, and at low angles of misalignment and comparable high speeds to traditional industrial couplings.
Cracking leads to catastrophic failure and replacement of both the hubs is assured. This makes it an expensive repair as with the price of the jaw coupling is cheap but machinery downtime and labor to replace and repair the equipment makes them an expensive coupling is something goes wrong.
