Lovejoy Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR, Buna-N, Nitrile rubber insert), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.
Spider couplings maintenance comes in 2 areas, spider insert and hubs. The spider insert can wear in two different ways, 1. Edge/Leg wear and 2. Compression.
1 Edge /Leg wear comes when the coupling is used at the maximum angle, this is something that because of the very small angle of misalignment a jaw coupling can be used at, so any out of alignment means these inserts will wear quickly.
The same goes if the coupling is used in an application where there is variation in its use, for example a conveyor belt where the weight passing over the coupling varies which means the coupling will move up and down, again creating wear on the legs.
2. Compression – Wear compression basically comes from the design itself, the 2 jaws keep the safety aspect of the coupling apart, the insert wears away, the coupling can still be used but with a huge increase of vibration and no ability for the coupling to flex.
The Lovejoy L-090 elastomeric insert compresses over time from both use and misalignment but as it compresses this means an increase of vibration and the risk of failure.
Couplings in the industrial sector traditionally are broken into two sectors, the elastomeric couplings that can only run at angles of 4° or less otherwise they wear out, as they cannot physically flex beyond that, normally they run at 1/2° – 1°.
The other are universal joints which can normally only run at less than 8° otherwise prematurely wearing the bearings within the propeller shaft of the universal joint, the bearings need constant greasing if a friction bearing type uni joint or the more expensive needle bearing, needs less greasing but still needs to be done.
Both types of bearings will need to be replaced anyway as the friction will wear the bearings out.
The bearings need also to be constantly greased otherwise with them running at high speed the bearing fail due to the heat created by friction.
Jaw couplings the spiders wear after use of 1/2° – 1° and yokes can crack.
Twin Spring Coupling can run up to 15° without needing to be lubrication, and at low angles of misalignment and comparable high speeds to traditional industrial couplings.
Bearings being very precise instruments also need to be contained to ensure infiltration by any foreign contaminants, as things like water, mud, dust or dirt will again cause the bearings to seize and this means the bearing need to be replaced.
The other downside to a universal joint are the yokes, the coupling piece of the yokes are quite tough but the section that hold the bearings, this is a weak point as the machining to contain the bearings is a lot smaller than the rest of the yoke, which means the likely of them cracking or break is that much higher.
Cracking leads to catastrophic failure and replacement of both the yoke and universal joint is assured. This makes it an expensive repair as with the price of the yoke and universal joint, it is usually cheaper just to replace everything, both yokes and the propeller joint.
Twin Spring Coupling is different it replaces the entire U joint or jaw couplings, everything, with a simple one piece design.
By being a one piece design also means Twin Spring Coupling wont break like the yokes do in traditional Lovejoy L-090 joints.
