Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR, Buna-N, Nitrile Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert. Change the C226 jaw with Hytrel and Bronze spider insert with the TSC500 model with no spider inserts to maintain or replace.
Couplings in an industrial power transmission setup have a number of issues to contend with, annual maintenance, fundamental design flaws coming from a century old technology, industry has evolved but the technology that makes up the standard coupling and universal joint has not.

Industrial power transmission is broken into two main areas, high speed low angle of misalignment and lower speed higher angle of misalignment. Traditionally these two needs have been serviced by different couplings – Motion control couplings like the C-226 jaw type couplings and universal joint.
The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1 degrees of misalignment before they start to wear out, this includes SOX, Buna-N and Urethane spider inserts.
The elastomeric insert or “spider Insert” allowed flexibility and also vibration absorption, but the elastomeric insert would on the softer inserts compress over time and with use, which leads to it needing to be replaced.
The Hytrel and Bronze version of the C-226 can only flex to 1/2 degree before its starts to wear and cause an increase in vibration. The universal joint can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission that’s going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
