Spring Couplings are another form of flexible shaft coupling but usually down at the lower end of the market, as they usually have a low ability to transfer torque and to run at high speeds, so they normally aren’t considered to replace couplings like universal joints, jaw couplings and grid couplings.
Spring couplings have one thing in common, springs but the biggest issue they have is how they are attached to the input and output hub, that’s where the difference is.
Spring couplings come in different types and have different names, grid couplings (use an internal wound spring) servo couplings like beam couplings are also describes as spring couplings (the cuts made in the coupling make it resemble a spring), as well as standard spring coupling (one single spring with the end bent and pressed into the hub.
Spring couplers are used for a number of reasons mainly to keep maintenance low, no bearings to grease and no spider inserts to replace.
Lovejoy Uniflex but without welds and improves flexibility and torque
Spring couplings like the Lovejoy Uniflex range are welded on to the hubs, which is not good as the welding process changes the make up of the metal in the spring, making it more likely to snap with increased torque, we know we found that out the hard way.

Other spring couplings fold the end of the spring coil into a slot on the hubs, that also has two issues, one the torque is concentrated on the bend of the spring making it more likely to snap as torque is increased. Adding to that at higher speed the spring has a tendency to jump or be forced out of the slot with increased torque as well.
So how does Twin Spring Coupling make its spring couplings so it isn’t welded and isn’t made with the spring coil slot?

We use a friction fit technique which means the springs screw onto the hubs and cant be unscrewed. This means no welds and no bent coils.
In addition to that we use torsion springs so springs that are able to take a lot more torque.

It offers a highly flexible coupling so to be as flexible as most universal joints but also due to the torsion springs able to handle a lot more torque, torque similar to jaw couplings, universal joint couplings and elastomeric couplings, like grid flex type couplings.

The TSC150 is capable of 25 degrees misalignment, 150ft lbs. of nominal torque and speeds of up to 7000 rpm.
The TSC300 is capable of 45 degrees misalignment, 300ft lbs. of nominal torque and speeds of up to 7000 rpm.
The TSC500 is capable of 25 degrees misalignment, 500ft lbs. of nominal torque and speeds of up to 7000 rpm.
