Couplings in the industrial sector traditionally are broken into two sectors, jaw couplings that can only run at angles of 1° or less otherwise they wear out, as they cannot physically flex beyond that. The other are universal joints.
Lovejoy L-190 Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR / Buna-N / Nitrile rubber insert), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert. This coupling is broken down across two Twin Spring Coupling models.

The problem with both couplings are their fundamental design weaknesses, for motion control coupling they can run fast but cannot work at over 1° of misalignment before they start to wear out. With Hytrel or Bronze its only 1/2° so even less.
The universal joint can run at more than 4 degrees but needs constant maintenance to keep the bearings and pivot point greased or they too will wear out quickly.
On top of that they traditionally cannot run over 8 degrees before technical issues like balancing and bearing wear become issues. In a 24/7/365 situation like industrial power transmission couplings that’s going to create interruption and a increased annual maintenance bill.
