Couplings in the industrial sector traditionally are broken into two sectors, the beam/bellows or elastomeric couplings that can only run at angles of 1° or less, as they cannot physically flex beyond that, Bronze and Hytrel spider can only run at 1/2°.
Lovejoy L-100 Jaw couplings are a 3 piece elastomeric coupling, an input and output hub and a spider insert, the insert can be made up of 3 different materials SOX – (NBR/Buna-N/Nitrile Rubber), Urethane, Hytrel and Bronze.
Each insert gets progressively stiffer and less able to absorb vibration so the angular misalignment becomes smaller with each insert.
Jaw couplings, the spiders wear after use of 1/2° – 1° and being compressed between the two hubs and these hubs can crack are the main maintenance issues with jaw couplings.
The other power transmission couplings are universal joints which are broken into two categories, friction bearing or needle bearing.
Twin Spring Coupling can run up to 25° without needing to be lubrication, and at low angles of misalignment and comparable high speeds to traditional industrial couplings.
What is different between a jaw coupling and a Twin Spring coupling?
Simple a one piece design like you get with the Twin Spring coupling verses three piece design with a jaw coupling, that triples what can go wrong.
Wearing out spider inserts adds a lot to the “cheap” price of a jaw coupling, the inserts are cheap if you have the Nitrile rubber version but not so much with the harder Hytrel and Bronze inserts (who while they don’t wear as fast still need replacing and with only half the operating angle are limited in their use). The biggest cost is the cost of labor to replace the insert and add to that the downtime of the equipment.
Cracked hubs catastrophic failure and replacement of both the insert and hub is assured. This makes it an expensive repair as with the price of the hub and insert while cheap, the cost of labor and lost production is not.
